The Memphis Tigers, who always seem to end up the underdog despite their #1 seeding and 36-1 record, obliterated the Michigan State Spartans last night 92-74 in a regional semifinal game that was over by halftime. Tomorrow we play the Texas Longhorns in a #1 vs. #2 matchup to determine who will represent the South Region in the Final Four. It’s Memphis’ third consecutive elite eight appearance, although it has been 23 years since they were in the Final Four.
Last night’s first half was perhaps the best half of basketball I have ever witnessed in 26 years as a Tiger fan. After having their lead trimmed to 16-13, the Tigers closed the half on a 34-7 run to go up 50-20. Oh yeah, and the Tigers, who can’t shoot free throws, shot 74% from the charity stripe (26-for-35) in temporarily silencing the know-it-all sports media, who hyped up a possible return by Michigan State to the Final Four as a #5 seed. I can’t quite figure out how Memphis continues to be the underdog, but it sure has served us well.
