Everything I despise about liberalism

with one comment

I try to live healthy. I run 15-20 miles a week. I keep my cholesterol down. I usually eat well. But sometimes I indulge. I’ll eat two double cheeseburgers from McDonald’s. Or I’ll make a 3-egg omlet, with bacon on the side. It’s my own darn business. I don’t want government or anyone else telling me what to eat and what not to eat. Likewise, I enjoy running. But I don’t want government or anyone else telling me I have to. I know what’s good for me, and I know what’s bad for me. I don’t need some busybody liberal or government bureaucrat telling me I shouldn’t be eating that double cheeseburger. I know I shouldn’t be eating it, but I choose to eat it anyway. I guess you could say that I’m pro-choice when it comes to personal lifestyle.

Apparently, President Obama is about to make YOUR lifestyle choices for you. He is determined to make it HIS business what you eat and how much exercise you get. This is what irritates me most about liberalism, and, believe me, everything about liberalism irritates me. But the authoritarian I-know-what’s-best-for-you aspect of liberalism gets me the most. Liberals are the smart parents. We are the dumb children.

From the White House garden to his picks for top health jobs, Obama is telling America’s McDonald’s-loving, couch-dwelling, doctor-phobic populace that things are about to change.

Don’t be fooled by the presidential burger runs. Obama and Congress are moving across several fronts to give government a central role in making America healthier — raising expectations among public health experts of a new era of activism unlike any before.

Any health care reform plan that Obama signs is almost certain to call for nutrition counseling, obesity screenings and wellness programs at workplaces and community centers. He wants more time in the school day for physical fitness, more nutritious school lunches and more bike paths, walking paths and grocery stores in underserved areas.

The epitome of classlessness

without comments

Imagine if a conservative comedian had said about a liberal woman and her teenage daughter what David Letterman said about Sarah Palin and her daughter.

Sarah Palin says David Letterman owes an apology to young women across the country for his joke about her daughter.

The Alaska governor appeared on NBC’s “Today” show Friday, continuing a feud with the CBS “Late Show” funnyman over his joke earlier this week that Palin’s daughter got “knocked up” by New York Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez during their recent trip to New York.

I have yet to understand why the left, which pretends to care about women’s rights and all, has dealt so savagely with Sarah Palin and her family. Perhaps they feel threatened by her, and that’s what drives them into a rage. But liberals will be liberals. I guess you can’t get mad at them for simply being who they are.

Identity politics

without comments

The headline says it all. Barack Obama has nominated a far left judicial activist, Sonia Sotomayor, to the Supreme Court. No surprise there. We’ll deal with her judicial philosophy later. But her nomination itself illustrates a fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives. Liberals, who claim to be colorblind, nonetheless see people as members of a group. Conservatives see people as individuals. Notice how the media give her the first name of “Hispanic.” To conservatives, her first name is simply “Sonia.”

The nuts-and-bolts of cap-and-trade

without comments

Blue Collar Muse manages to boil the Democrats’ cap-and-trade legislation down to this succinct bullet:

If Democrats really believe in America First as they say they do and which others question, why are they pushing a plan that will “… reduce the nation’s GDP by $7.4 trillion, raise electricity rates 90 percent and gasoline prices 74 percent”?

Of course, Democrats don’t believe in America First. They believe in Government First. They usurp power by stripping away individual liberty. Economically, this means raising taxes on the taxpayers, and raising the cost-of-living for consumers. The end result is reduced economic liberty, which limits the economic choices Americans can make. Don’t ever believe Democrats are looking out for you, even if you’re the “little guy” Democrats pretend to champion. They’re out for you, too, under the guise that they can make better choices for your life than you can.

America’s car-designer-in-chief

without comments

This is liberalism at its worst. President Obama has assumed the role of car designer. Even though he has absolutely no constitutional authority to make these kinds of demands of the private sector, he’s doing it anyway, and no one has the cojones to stop him. Liberals have for years been trying to get us to drive tin can automobiles, using the global warming hoax as a wedge between us and our SUV’s. Liberalism succeeds only by convincing individuals to act against their own self-interest. And if liberals can’t convince us, they’ll use the power of government to force us. In this case, Americans will be forced into buying a bunch of cars we don’t want.

President Barack Obama is asking consumers to put their money — up to $1,300 per new vehicle by 2016 — behind his plan for higher efficiency standards for cars and trucks and tougher rules on their greenhouse gas emissions. In return, Obama said Tuesday in unveiling the plan, drivers would make up the higher cost of more fuel-efficient, cleaner vehicles by buying less gas at the pump.

Confessions of a former liberal

without comments

Someone named Robin over at American Thinker has penned a letter of apology for mistreating others during her years of being a liberal. Here’s a brief excerpt. The entire letter is well worth the read.

Actress Sarah Bernhardt hoped a gang of black males would rape her. When Palin’s church was torched with children inside, the press was missing in action (somehow I imagine the press would have been all over this if Obama’s church were torched). Not only was the misogyny disgusting, but the classism was abhorrent. The Democrats, by ridiculing Palin’s voice and her education, were acting like arrogant snobs. The party had changed, I had changed, and the differences looked irreconcilable.

The final straw for me was when a close friend flew into a rage at me when she learned I wasn’t supporting Obama. The political became personal when she began impugning my character. Worse yet, she tried to intimidate me into changing my mind by threatening to dump me.

Suddenly a light went on. The peace and love and flower power of the old left was dead and gone (if it even existed to begin with except in my imagination). The Democrats had morphed into a power hungry Thought Police, and I was done with them. My new motto in life: don’t PC on me.

Why Democrats oppose school vouchers

with one comment

As has been discussed before here at Right Minded, Democrats have scuttled a highly-effective school voucher program in Washington, D.C. Why? The short answer is that the Democrat Party is beholden to teachers’ unions. The teachers’ unions, meanwhile, care far more about protecting the taxpayer-funded public school establishment than about actually educating children. School vouchers pose a threat to the public school establishment. Also, school vouchers give parents a choice that they otherwise would not have, and liberals are decidedly anti-choice, especially when it comes to education. Liberals believe they, and not the parents, know what’s best for the children. As State Representative Tommie Brown remarked recently in a committee hearing, the state really is the parent of the child. Liberals actually believe this.

Rush Limbaugh had a first-class monologue on this very topic during his show on Wednesday. Here’s an excerpt:

You have to ask yourself this question. How in the world have we gotten to the point where a program that does not only a great job of educating children, but a better job of educating children, how have we gotten to the point where a program that does a better job of educating black children with less money than public schools is considered controversial? How in the hell have we gotten there? And how in the hell have we gotten to the point where a school that educates poor black kids better and cheaper, that that poses a threat to somebody and the school has to be shut down? How in the world have we gotten to this point? These kids going to these voucher schools have a great chance, at least a greater chance to succeed. Doctors, lawyers, hedge funds. And Michelle Obama is telling them, don’t do that, don’t do that, don’t become doctors, don’t become lawyers, don’t become hedge funds, stay in your community and be a nurse, a community organizer, or what have you. And so you might say the worst thing the Obamas can have is an educated underclass because they don’t want them escaping the underclass, regardless their race.

The state is truly the parent of the child

without comments

Many liberals actually believe this. State Representative Tommie Brown is one of them. No, Representative Brown, you’re not truly the parent of my child. I am truly the parent of my child. Don’t fool yourself into believing that you have one iota of power over my child.

Writes Speaker Campfield: “A bunch of us just shook our heads when she said it in children and family committee. Unfortunately, this theory is not held by just one single legislator. There are several who push this agenda and have this mind set.”

By the way, here’s a link to the bill in question, HB 677. I watched the relevant portion of the video to make sure the quote “The state is truly the parent of the child” wasn’t taken out of context, and, believe me, Representative Browne actually believes that the state is truly the parent of the child.

Contraband dishwasher soap

with one comment

Enviromentalism has become so insane that they’re now banning diswasher soap that actually works in favor of dishwasher soap that doesn’t work. This is prompting residents to smuggle in their favorite dishwasher soap from the saner outside world.

The quest for squeaky-clean dishes has turned some law-abiding people in Spokane into dishwater-detergent smugglers. They are bringing Cascade or Electrasol in from out of state because the eco-friendly varieties required under Washington state law don’t work as well. Spokane County became the launch pad last July for the nation’s strictest ban on dishwasher detergent made with phosphates, a measure aimed at reducing water pollution. The ban will be expanded statewide in July 2010, the same time similar laws take effect in several other states.

But it’s not easy to get sparkling dishes when you go green.

Many people were shocked to find that products like Seventh Generation, Ecover and Trader Joe’s left their dishes encrusted with food, smeared with grease and too gross to use without rewashing them by hand. The culprit was hard water, which is mineral-rich and resistant to soap.

Spokane residents smuggle suds over green brands.

Thomas Jefferson on Barack Obama

with one comment

Last week during a press conference, President Obama’s teleprompter told him to compare Timothy “Tax Cheat” Geithner to our very first treasury secretary, Alexander Hamilton. Is was a passing comparison, but the Maha Rushie picked up on it and noted just how accurate a comparison the teleprompter made.

From the book Thomas Jefferson by R. B. Bernstein, page 90: “Jefferson feared that Hamilton had plans radically at odds with the Constitution. As [Jefferson] saw it, Hamilton wanted to warp the federal government out of constitutional shape, converting it into a copy of the British government, built on debt, corruption, and influence. Hamilton’s goal, Jefferson charged, was to ally the rich and well-born with the government at the people’s expense, creating a corrupt aristocracy leagued with the government against the people and destroying the virtue that was the basis of republican government.” Now, we can argue — we can argue, ladies and gentlemen — about Jefferson’s assessment of Alexander Hamilton. However, I wish to read this to you again, and I wish to say to you that Thomas Jefferson has just described the objectives of Barack Obama and the people he has brought into his administration.

Listen to this again: “Jefferson feared that Hamilton had plans radically at odds with the Constitution.” Check. So does Obama. “As [Jefferson] saw it, Hamilton wanted to warp the federal government out of constitutional shape…” Check. So does Obama. That Hamilton wanted to convert the government “into a copy of the British government.” Check. In modern times, we would call this a western, socialist democracy that is the UK, that is “built on debt, corruption, and influence.” Check, check, check. Debt piled upon debt, created by Obama. Corruption? We got a tax cheat in the secretary of Treasury. We’ve got lobbyists running all over the White House after Obama said there wouldn’t be any there — and influence? We have Rahm Emanuel calling members of the media every morning to plan coverage of the Obama administration with the stenographers in the mainstream press.

It sounds like to me Thomas Jefferson made a perfectly accurate observation of Barack Obama about 200 years before the fact.

Obama Wants to Channel Your Anger Toward Killing Capitalism.

Liberals are NOT pro-choice

without comments

Liberals are liberals, and it doesn’t matter where they’re from. For the last several years, the left has been trying to shove homosexuality down the throats of those who speak out against things like same-sex marriage, while using liberal-dominated public schools to normalize the deviant behavior of homosexuality, often against the wishes of parents. Of course, liberals know better than parents what’s best for their children. Liberals know what’s best for everyone.

Christian and Muslim parents in London who kept their primary school children away from controversial lessons promoting homosexuality could now face legal action by the local council.

The lessons – part of LGBT History Month – used books such as King and King, promoted by homosexual rights activists to help teach children about homosexual relationships.

Around 30 children were withdrawn from the week of lessons at George Tomlinson Primary School in Waltham Forest, East London.

A Waltham Forest Council spokesman confirmed that the withdrawals are being treated as “unauthorised absences” and that “action has been taken”.

Although the Council refused to say how they plan to punish parents, the Council website says that parents of truant children can be asked to sign a contract, fined on the spot or taken to court.

Today’s Lebanon Democrat column: “The 12th commandment of liberalism”

without comments

According to Politico, President Obama’s Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has consorted with top Democratic operatives, including regular CNN contributors James Carville and Paul Begala, to pillory Rush Limbaugh and make him the face of the Republican Party. The mainstream press, which has become more or less an arm of the Democrat Party, has been fully complicit.

It all began several weeks ago when Rush Limbaugh remarked that he wants the President’s economic policies to fail because he thinks they will harm the country, and Limbaugh instead wants the country to succeed.

The American left, including the Obama White House, has been following Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals #12 in an attempt to marginalize the Voice of Conservatism, the Maha Rushie. It states “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it. Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. (This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.)”

Nice try, Alinsky-ites, but it isn’t working, for at least two reasons.

1. The left didn’t make Rush Limbaugh, and so the left can’t break him. Rush Limbaugh has 20 million listeners. Even after the left’s best effort to marginalize El Rushbo, he still has 20 million listeners.

2. Rush Limbaugh is a private citizen. He cannot be impeached or voted out of office. His power comes not via the authority of government, but the persuasion of superior ideas. He cannot pass or veto legislation. He cannot appropriate taxpayer money. He cannot raise your taxes or lower them. He works behind a microphone. The only way you can strip the Maha Rushie of his “power” is to convince those 20 million listeners not to listen.

The left fears Rush Limbaugh because for 20 years liberals have been wholly unable to duplicate his success with one of their own. That’s because liberals cannot compete in the arena of ideas with conservatives. This is why liberals run to the courts to have their ideas adjudicated into law. They can’t even sell their ideas at the ballot box (i.e., same-sex marriage).

The reason is simple. America was founded on the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Those are also the basic tenets of conservatism. All three are currently under assault from liberals. The left does not honor the right to life (abortion, for example).

Liberals continually endeavor to strip Americans of their liberty by growing government and raising taxes. Every time they succeed at either, it comes at the expense of individual liberty and economic freedom.

And every poll that’s conducted on personal happiness shows that conservatives, as a whole, are far happier than liberals, and it doesn’t matter who’s in power. Liberals cleaned up on Election Day, and they’re still just as angry as ever. Just look at the anti-Proposition 8 mob in California. So if liberals are unhappy, then you should be unhappy, too. When they speak of “equality,” what they really mean is the equal distribution of misery.

Rush Limbaugh tells the truth about the Obama administration by showing that the President usually means the opposite of what he says. President Obama talks about the need for personal responsibility while overseeing the most reckless waste of taxpayer money in the history of our great nation (the stimulus/bailout package). He talks about the need for deficit reduction while overseeing, by far, the largest deficit in our history. He talks about tax cuts while at the same time proposing to raise taxes on the wealthy and small businesses. He talks about the need for job creation while at the same time punishing wealth, which is the very means of job creation. He proclaims that there are no earmarks in bills that are laden with them.

We’re living in the world of Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged, where government creeps into the private sector in order to punish the achievers in the name of “equality.” As a result, the economy goes into recession, and government, in an effort to “do something,” increases its role. (Rand called them “looters.”) The more the looters interfere, the worse the economy gets, and the worse the economy gets, the more the looters interfere until the entire economy collapses, and the achievers, tired of being punished for achieving, pull out of society altogether.

Like Ayn Rand’s fictional society, we are living in an era when personal initiative is discouraged in favor of government dependence, when achievement and wealth are scolded and punished, and when the entrepreneurs who actually create jobs and drive the economy are told they will have to be the ones to sacrifice. In Atlas Shrugged, John Galt is the leader of the protagonists, THE achiever among achievers. At one point in the novel, he preempts the radio airwaves just as the government is about to give a major, highly-advertised speech. Galt speaks for three hours ripping the looters, and he ends up more or less having Rule #12 applied to him. He is kidnapped by government force and the bureaucrats who are in power try to persuade him — even resorting to torture — to carry their water. He refuses, and is eventually rescued by his friends.

Granted, the Obama White House probably won’t be kidnapping Rush Limbaugh, but they will do everything they can to silence him by reimplementing the grossly misnamed Fairness Doctrine. Since liberals cannot compete in the arena of ideas, government mandates are their only weapon against the Voice of Conservatism. This is simply how liberals operate.

Because conservatives place such great value in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and because Barack Obama is undermining all three pillars, Rush is right in wanting him to fail.

Keeping the Third World trapped in the Third World

without comments

Terry Frank has a sobering post highlighting the devastating effects that environmentalism has on Third World countries, which takes me back to a keen observation by the Maha Rushie several months ago:

Everything the liberals tell us is a lie. Global warming is a hoax, all these things, but the fascinating thing is that when we are prosperous and when we are doing well, people have all kinds of time on their hands to invest in silly little causes to make themselves feel relevant, to give them a sense that their lives have meaning. But you let the economy hit the skids, and guess what? All these petty little causes just are forgotten.

Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, #12

without comments

The American left, including the Obama White House, has been following Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals#12 these past few days and weeks in an attempt to marginalize the Voice of Conservatism, the Maha Rushie. Rule #12 states “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it. Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. (This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.)”

Mr. Emanuel highlighted Mr. Limbaugh’s comments that he wants the Obama administration’s economic policies to fail.

Politico reported later in the week that Mr. Emanuel consorted with top Democratic operatives, including regular CNN contributors James Carville and Paul Begala, to try to make the flamboyant radio personality the face of the Republican Party.

White House spokesman Bill Burton said he disputed the Politico report but would not specify his point of contention.

Mr. Limbaugh has said he wants the president’s economic policies to fail because he thinks they will harm the country, and that he wants the country to succeed.

Nice try, but it isn’t working, for at least two reasons.

1. The left didn’t make Rush Limbaugh, and so the left can’t break him. Rush Limbaugh has 20 million listeners. Even after the left’s best effort to marginalize El Rushbo, he still has 20 million listeners. And that’s 20 million engaged, active citizens, not just 20 million mind-numbed robots, as with your typical Obama voter.

And good luck doing that.

The left fears Rush Limbaugh because for 20 years they have been wholly unable to duplicate his success with one of their own.

That is also the basic tenet of conservatism. All three are currently under assault from liberals. The left does not honor the right to life for either the young or the old (abortion, assisted suicide). They continually endeavor to strip Americans of their liberty by growing government and raising taxes. And if liberals are unhappy, then you should be unhappy, too. And so when liberals talk of “equality,” what they really mean is the equal distribution of misery.

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are still a pretty good sell to the American public, and it’s what Rush Limbaugh hammers home every program. As long as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness remain popular among the American people, the Maha Rushie will continue to draw listeners.

Rush Limbaugh tells the truth about the Obama administration by showing that the Obamessiah usually means the opposite of what he says. President Obama talks about the need for personal responsibility while overseeing the most reckless waste of taxpayer money in the history of our great nation (the stimulus/bailout package). He talks about the need for deficit reduction while overseeing the largest deficits — by far — in our history. He talks about tax cuts while at the same time proposing to raise taxes on the wealthy and small businesses. He talks about the need for job creation while at the same time punishing wealth, which is the very means of job creation.

As I’ve said before, we’re living in the world of Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged, where government creeps into the private sector in order to punish the achievers in the name of “equality.” As a result, the economy goes into recession, and government, in an effort to “do something,” increases its role. To liberals, the government is charity

without comments

Liberals are all about charities and helping the poor and needy, right? Wrong. And we’ve shown over the years here at Right Minded that liberals don’t really care about the poor. They merely use the poor the same way they use the global warming hoax: to grow government. President Obama’s tax increase would wipe out part of the charitable deductions high income earners can take, which will only serve the purpose of discouraging charitable giving.

That’s insane, right? After all, liberals love charity. No, they don’t. That’s why the generosity index shows those living in red states consistently out-give those living in blue states. Conservatives are the ones who support charities the most. To liberals, the government represents charity, which they seek to fund with other people’s money, and not their own. You see, private charities distribute money as they see fit — not the government. Liberals hate this, because they’re not in control. They would prefer that government be the source of all “charitable” distributions, and not the private sector, because they are in control of government. So if they can re-route money from private charities to government, they’ll do it.

In his preliminary budget, Obama says he plans to pay for his health care reform by increasing the burden on those he considers “rich,” families earning more than $250,000. In particular, taxpayers would only be able to take itemized deductions against a 28% tax rate, instead of the actual rate they paid, which in 2011 could be as high as 39.6%. That means they’d still be paying nearly a 12% tax on items they were supposedly allowed to deduct.

But the rich arent the only ones who could lose under this plan, critics say. Those who benefit from the wealthy’s deductible charitable contributions could also feel the pain, as the rich cut back on giving.

The Obama stock market

with one comment

Unlike liberals, who wanted a sour economy during the Bush presidency so they could blame it on Bush, I actually am not enjoying the recession, nor especially the stock market collapse, since it hurts me personally. Does President Obama care that Americans are losing their jobs and private retirement accounts? Not hardly. Every American who loses his shirt in the current economy is an American who is more inclined to turn to government assistance both in the present and in retirement. Government-dependent Americans are exactly what liberals want, since they live to micro-manage Americans via government control. Liberals are in their element right now. Rush was right. Liberals are funny when they’re out of power. But once they assume power, they are down-right dangerous, at least dangerous to those of us who value individual liberty and the prosperity of an unfettered free market.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled through the 7000 level shortly after the open, then through 6900 and 6800 to finish at 6763.29, down 299.64, or 4.2%. The Dow has fallen 7,401.24 points from the October 2007 record, a 52% drop.
